Description

Health information professionals are likely familiar with patient registration and hospital-based medical coding but may be less familiar with the registration of cancer tumours for population-based data and information. This presentation introduces the BC and Yukon Cancer Registry and defines the roles and purpose of a cancer registry.

The BC Cancer Registry (BCCR), which is part of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), meets a provincial mandate and aims to register every cancer case in BC. BCCR is also responsible for building and maintaining the Yukon Territory Cancer Registry.

This presentation will:

  • Describe BCCR’s role and relationship with other organizations
  • Highlight case ascertainment as an important metric of data quality of cancer registries
  • Explain data sources, uses of cancer data, and career paths for HIM professionals in the registry
