Experiential pathway application process to become certified with the Canadian College of Health Information Management

To access the self-assessment, please submit the download the self-assessment package. Applicants will receive a link via email to download the package. Instructions to complete the self-assessment are included within the document. Please read the instructions carefully. Submit the completed self-assessment and supporting documentation in step 2.

Eligibility requirements for the CHIM certification:

The minimum requirements to be eligible for the experiential pathway for the CHIM certification include all the following:

  • Hold a degree in a related competency. The applicant must have graduated from a Canadian or equivalent baccalaureate degree or higher to be eligible to continue the experiential pathway process.*
  • A minimum of 3 years of recent (within the last 5 years) work experience in health information management, or related health field.
  • Combined education and experience to meet, at a minimum, 80% of the curricular standards
  • For international professionals, proof of English language proficiency (overall IELTS or an equivalent alternative must be 7.0 with no individual score lower than 6.0; the College may make exceptions for applicants who studied university in an English-speaking country)

*CHIM Experiential Pathway applicants are advised to submit official documentation to the Canadian College of Health Information Management confirming the equivalence of their international degree to a Canadian degree. Submitting this documentation accelerates the review process. The College welcomes degree graduates in finance, insurance, law, business management, statistics, health sciences, and other related practices. Contact us for confirmation of your eligibility if your degree is not included in the provided options.

  • A minimum of 3 years of recent (within the last 5 years) work experience in an associate. Click here to learn more about associate roles.
  • Combined education and experience to meet, at a minimum, 80% of the curricular standards
  • For international professionals, proof of English language proficiency (overall IELTS or an equivalent alternative must be 7.0 with no individual score lower than 6.0; the College may make exceptions for applicants who studied university in an English-speaking country)

Important notes:

The Canadian College of Health Information Management reserves the right to reject any application at any point in time prior to, during, or following the review process, at their discretion.

Individuals applying through the experiential pathway are not eligible to apply for an NCE until they have been formally approved by the Canadian College of Health Information Management.
