Bringing Data to Life Through Information Governance

Data and information are being created exponentially, making our ability to create, collect, share, use, and regulate data and information more critical than ever. Data and information are the new currency, and our ability to uncover these hidden assets is crucial to successful evidence-based policy and person-centred health care. Organizations must design themselves into harmonized entities where core functions work together, deliberately and consciously, to generate better overall outcomes. The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) created a Health Data and Information Governance Framework to do just that – create a common language and checklist to help organizations more efficiently govern their data assets in a coordinated enterprise-way. A focused example for determining who is required to update or add new data standards into an organization successfully will be shared. The Framework and application will demonstrate tangible ways organizations can design themselves to increase operations’ consistency to work together effectively.

Eric Sutherland

 

Eric is a “Data Guy with personality” and Data Strategist with a passion for enabling trusted insight through implementation of leading information management practices and linking enterprise strategy to practical solutions with business, technology, and data partners. He is the head for Secretariat for a pan-Canadian Health Data Strategy which envisions the better use of data for health systems, public health, population health, research, and care. This work is led by the Public Health Agency of Canada in collaboration with all jurisdictions.

Previously, Eric worked as Executive Director, Data Governance Strategy at the Canadian Institute for Health Information, and Director, Information Management Strategy and Policy at the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. He continues to recover from 20 years at a major financial institution, with a variety of roles lead data, business, and technology groups across finance and risk.

Rachel is currently the lead of Data and Information Governance at the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). With over a decade of experience in health research, data management, data quality and indicator development, Rachel is combining her data lifecycle knowledge into a novel program of work for CIHI. Rachel has quickly become a subject matter expert in data governance practices and policies, accountability models for strategic governance, standards development and enterprise stewardship. Rachel holds a Master of Science in Human Kinetics and an Honours Baccalaureate of Health Sciences, both from the University of Ottawa.
